Participants will learn to create area models to represent a variety of expansion and factorisation approaches for stage 5 algebraic expressions. They will also develop area models for operations with surds and consider examples of how area models can extend into stage 6 mathematics. Time is also spent exploring different approaches to using area models, including concrete materials, drawn or annotated diagrams and using online interactive tools.
Participants will leave this course with an understanding of how area models are used to represent a variety of situations as well as skills to empower students with these ideas. In addition, participants are provided with a resource booklet containing lesson ideas including worksheets and links to the online tools used during the course.
Is this course for me?
This course is designed for teachers of stage 5 mathematics who are familiar with basic area models and are looking to effectively use them to teach stage 5 concepts of multiplication, division, expansion and factorisation. For teachers who are new to using area models, it is advised that you first complete the MANSW course Introduction to Area Models.
